Why We Need to Stop Flocking Blindly Toward Cookie-Cutter Pieces of Modern Technology

When you think of all of the various entertainment mediums that are available to us today, you really do start to wonder how we survived only a few decades ago prior to the introduction of smart phones, ultra-fast Internet connections and super-realistic video games.

Whilst many will claim that we’re much better off living in the current state we do, surrounded by electronics and social media there is no denying that when things were simpler, life was also a whole lot easier.

Considering you can’t halt time though, we should perhaps focus our attention on the pieces of technology – the electronics, games and gadgets – that have taken up such a vital role in our lives that, simple put, we’d really struggle to live without.

The obvious choice here is to start talking about things like cell phones and Facebook, however, they’re more like distractions that genuine sources of entertainment. You check your Facebook just to waste time, not to enjoy it!

Perhaps one of the most reliable sources of entertainment has always come in the form of video games. Whether you’re talking about playing on an Atari, a PC or even a PlayStation 4, the medium of gaming has always been a staple in our lives when it comes to home media and our prolonged enjoyment.

Certain genres of video games have been known to come and go but when you focus on the styles of games that have enjoyed popularity and kept us enthralled the longest, you really struggle to go past the simulator-style games, especially the flight simulator games that sell insanely well on PC.

All you have to do is view one of the countless mega-fan sites dedicated to the genre – the site that I write for; Flight Sim Heaven – is perhaps one of the largest, to become overwhelmed at just how remarkably hot these titles have grown to be amongst the modern gamer.

The mix of mind-blowing realism and very specific attention to detail when artfully recreating all of the aircraft featured within these games has instilled flight simulators as having the reputation of being a ‘pure’ game.

Gamers who consider themselves to be traditionalists when it comes to the art of losing yourself in the digital media air their voices loud and proud to reinforce the evolving popularity of the plane simulator.

Younger generations will most likely agree with this and will routinely spout out the features that come along with their latest iPhones and tablets.

This is a generation though that flock out to their local electronics retail store to purchase a new phone simply because it has a bigger screen or a slightly more impressive camera; it’s madness!

I don’t believe in judging or belittling anyone’s thoughts and opinions, yet these guys and girls couldn’t be more wrong!

It’s important to remember that while gadgets and pieces of geeky technology are incredibly useful and fun, they don’t provide us with the same, long-lasting entertainment value that video games like flight simulators have proven to do time and time again over the decades.

When it comes down to where you’re going to spend your hard-earned cash, it’s entirely up to you. From my own personal point of view, I think I’ll be picking up the piece of technology that offers me hundreds of hours of fun and enjoyment that I won’t have to update again in 3 months when a ‘new’ model is released!
